Design Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress by Alexander McQueen

Ever since the wedding was announced, rumors have been swirling about which designer would have the honor of designing Kate Middleton’s wedding dress. Could Alexander McQueen successor, Sarah Burton, be the lucky one? That’s what the Daily Mail is reporting.

According to the Sunday Times, one of the label’s top execs, Jonathan Akeroyd, told a colleague that the company had won the commission — and that’s how the story broke. Kate had been chatting with Sara Buys, who writes for Harpers Bazaar and wore McQueen for her own wedding in 2005 (photo at right) to Prince William’s step-brother, Tom Parker Bowles (that would be Camilla’s son). Buys reportedly “would have given [Kate] a good knowledge of the best designers,” reports the newspaper.

When questioned about having the commission, however, both Akeroyd and Burton (inset, right) adamantly denied they did. “I am not doing it,” Burton said. Still, the rumors persist, since we all know that the dress designer would be bound to secrecy by Buckingham Palace anyway and will likely not confirm until Kate steps onto the aisle.

But just the rumor has set the fashion world a-buzz with the idea of what a Kate/McQueen collaboration could look like. “Sunday Times claims Sarah Burton is doing Kate Middleton’s dress! She’s got more chutzpah than we gave her credit for then…” tweeted @ELLEUK. “Hope McQueen/Middleton wedding dress rumour [sic] true as have predicted/wished it from day one. Bazaar fash ed Sara Buys an iconic trendsetter!!” Harper’s Bazaar editor Lucy Yeomans wrote.

McQueen, who famously debuted his “claw high-heel” in 2009, tragically killed himself last year after a long struggle with depression. His designs have endured since then and shown up on the likes of Michelle Obama. Though his direction is often unpredictable (check out some of his past creations below), the Daily Mail says the selection would be “a fashion-forward and imaginative choice that promises to do the high-profile occasion justice.” We couldn’t agree more.
